Mt. Carroll Illinois offers relaxation and an escape from everyday stress, along with a cultural setting that you would expect in a much larger city. With a population of only 1,832, the people of Mt. Carroll have a lot to boast about!
As the pictures above show the town is blessed with having a beautiful downtown area. Mt Carroll is home to the Carroll County Courthouse. It was built in 1848, with a new addition in 1858.
In front of the Courthouse is the Civil War Memorial, dedicated on the 6th of October 1891. In the history section of this web site you can find a complete list of the names listed on the Civil War Memorial.
The downtown shops in Mt. Carroll could only be characterized as quaint. As you walk down the brick streets you will find art galleries, espresso shops, tearooms, cafés, beautiful antiques, textiles, gift shops and more. Saturday mornings during the summer you’ll find the Mt. Carroll Farmers Market, located in front of the Courthouse. Farmers bring their fresh produce to market along with oven fresh baked goods and more.
There is a lot to be done around Mt. Carroll besides shopping. You can go horseback riding at Smooth Gait Ranch, or play a few holes of golf at Oakville Golf Course, and have a picnic at Point Rock Park Along the Waukarusa River. At night you can head over to the Timber Lake Playhouse. The oldest continuous stock theater in Illinois, Timber Lake Playhouse provides wonderful entertainment and a cultural experience.
If not all members of your party are into theater, you can always send the extras down to Raven's Grin Inn. Featured as the cover story on National Geographic World, this is not your normal haunted house, or like anything else you’ have ever seen before.
As the night gets late you’ll want a place to sleep. In this small town there is no problem finding exactly what you want.
